Friday night hangover

Monday 12 November 2018

The strong winds during Friday night's high tide left lasting damage at Castle Cornet with the slipway now closed to the public until it can be fixed.

Fences were put at the top of the slipway, behind the Fishy Tales kiosk by the Model Yacht Pond, soon after huge cracks were found in the slipway on Saturday morning.

Guernsey Harbours said on Monday morning, it is "now assessing the damage caused to vital infrastructure following last Friday’s storm."

While there was damage caused in other places along the east coast, the Havelet slipway "bore the brunt of the winds and very strong tidal currents, with the structure suffering considerable damage," said Guernsey Harbours. "As a result, the slipway is now closed to the public and port users for the foreseeable future."

States Property Services will be working with the Harbourmaster, Captain David Barker, on possible repair options.

“This was a short sharp storm, with gusts up to Force Ten," said Captain Barker. "Even though our harbours provide excellent protection from the weather, it still managed to damage some of our mooring pontoons and the slipway at Havelet Bay. We will make repairs as soon as possible but this is a timely reminder to keep an eye on the forecast and take precautions, particularly if you are a boat owner – it certainly won’t be the last storm of the winter.”

Guernsey Harbours also confirmed one of its 'swan pool pontoons' was also damaged beyond repair.

Further along the east coast, at the Red Lion slipway, the wall was breached, with reports that the storm boards placed across the slipway during bad weather and hide tides were "washed away."

The road was flooded on Friday night with civil protection volunteers helping Guernsey Police to divert traffic off the coast road, from 19:00 as the stormy weather coincided with the high tide.

Later on Friday night, motorbikes were seen floating in the water opposite Havelet Bay after they were left parked next to the zebra crossing opposite the slipway.

Trees also came down across the island, including at Saints Road in St Martins, by La Houguette School, and at the filter by Grandes Rocques garage.

Also on Friday night, the emergency services were called to reports of a fire at the roadworks at the junction of Grandes Maison Road and Richmond Corner.
