Free books!

Saturday 02 March 2019

An initiative to give away free books is aiming to ensure every child, from birth to the sometimes troublesome teenage years, has something new to read today.

The ladies from Soroptimist International Guernsey will be at Guille Alles Library between 10:00 and 13:00, offering a free book to every child who attends during that time.

As an organisation, Soroptimists aim to 'inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through a global network of members and international partnerships' and this includes through education.

Soroptimists say they are 'committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities worldwide.'

The Guernsey branch is spearheading the big book give-a-way today, with Club Presidents Shirley Marsh and Karen Jagger both pleased to be involved.

Mrs Marsh said; "as Soroptimists we strive to transform the lives of girls through education and empowerment, I can’t think of a better way to do this than by fostering a love of books. Through reading a child can open their mind to a larger exciting world. We hope to spark this interest with a gift of a book."

Mrs Jagger added; "as Soroptimists we strive to transform the lives of girls through education and empowerment, I can’t think of a better way to do this than by fostering a love of books. Through reading any child can open their mind to a larger exciting world. We hope to spark this interest for both girls and boys with a gift of a book."
