Plans have been submitted to redevelop Fort Richmond, with a buyer poised to take on the historic Guernsey property.

Once used as barracks, during efforts to protect the island from a French invasion, it has now been empty for many years.

Pictured: Fort Richmond was listed for sale for £1.5million.

It was listed for sale by Cooper Brouard but it was not showing on the estate agents website on Friday, the same day a planning application for the redevelopment of the Fort appeared.

At the time the estate agent said it couldn't comment but since then a statement has been released by the States Property Services department which had been trying to sell the building.

"Property Services has received an offer for Fort Richmond, and has given the prospective purchaser approval to seek planning permission for a number changes," the statement said.

Head of Estates Strategy, Mark Ogier, added:

“We are optimistic that a sale will be agreed, but we are not in a position to give any further details at present. If this does result in a successful sale, it will of course be a matter of public record at that time.

The planning application was lodged by Bembridge Limited, and includes proposals to install a swimming pool and a bridge, with new parking areas and changes to the windows and doors.
