Harbours support floating restaurant plans

Tuesday 23 June 2020

Guernsey Harbours is backing plans for a floating restaurant in the QEII Marina, referring to the area as an "under-utilised part of St Peter Port Harbour".

Jon Wilson of Township Holdings Limited has submitted plans for the eatery, which would carry 200 passengers and staff over two decks - a restaurant and a downstairs bar.

"Guernsey Harbours has fully consulted with the applicant on their proposals," said Ports Commercial Manager, Doug Wright.

"If approved by the Development & Planning Authority, the restaurant vessel would be moored in the QEII marina near the boules courts on the wester end of the North Beach car park, with access arrangements that would be separate from the existing private morning holder pontoons."

The boat would be positioned about four metres away from the quay and would be connected to land by a covered gangway, allowing access at all states of the tide.

If approved, it would be kept in place using plies and, at low tide, would come to rest on a bed of recycled aggregate to protect it from the rough rocks underneath.

"The proposed scheme would result in no loss of private vessel moorings and the area is an under-utilised part of St Peter Port Harbour," Mr Wright added.

"Other drying out areas for vessels are still available at the northern end of the QEII, the Victoria Marina, Albert Marina and the Careening Hard in St Peter Port. In St Sampson's, a drying out facility is also available at the Crocq Pier near the clock tower on Southside."

The topic sparked debate when it hit social media, with some saying they were excited at the idea of lunch on the water, while others expressed concerns about the logistics.

"Love this. A fantastic idea for an island like ours," Sharon commented on Express' Facebook page. She was backed by Lesley, who added: "I like the idea of this, something different for Guernsey. Have seen this in some European locations."

However, Lisa had a slightly different view: "Lovely idea - not a very nice picturesque place to have it though? Wonder how waste etc. would be managed and wouldn’t want to eat there during low tide!"

"Totally the wrong place, would spoil the area completely," agreed John. "Also, the water in the marina has enough rubbish floating in it already without adding to it."

The Development & Planning Authority is yet to announce its decision.
