Fishing issues "require ongoing cooperation and negotiation"

Monday 21 September 2020

Issues around Covid-19, Brexit and fishing were discussed at Guernsey's annual political summit with Jersey, Normandy and the department of La Manche.

Due to current restrictions, the summit was held via a video conference. The annual event has been held since 2015, when a cooperation agreement was signed between the jurisdictions in order to improve cooperation and opportunities to work together.

The summit focussed on three main issues which affect all parties: the impact of Covid-19, the UK's imminent departure from the EU, and fishing, which has been in the spotlight in the last week.

Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, who represented Guernsey as our lead on External Affairs, said by working together we can "plan for potential challenges now rather than always reacting to them after the event."

Minister for External Relations in Jersey, Senator Ian Gorst, said that fishing matters require "ongoing cooperation and negotiation" between the Channel Islands and France.

“The Normandy Summit provides a welcome opportunity for us strengthen the long-standing relationship with our nearest neighbours," he said.

“This is particularly important, given the international scope of the challenges we face. Britain’s departure from the EU, and the outbreak of COVID-19 have had – and will continue to have – effects across borders and communities."

Alderney was represented by Vice-President James Dent and Sark by Chief Secretary Zannette Bougourd.
