Art for Guernsey has curated a selection of Charlie Buchanan’s watercolour paintings ahead of a larger upcoming exhibition themed around myths and legends.
This small exhibition - L’s Olures (‘The Myths’ in Guernésiais) - aligns the visual arts and literature, is staged in association with the Guernsey Literary Festival, which selected Myths & Legends as the theme of this year’s WriteStuff competition for aspiring young wordsmiths.
Artist Charlie Buchanan has a long-standing relationship with Art for Guernsey: they curated an exhibition for her in 2018 and sponsored the publication of Charlie and Magnus Buchanan’s book The Invasion of the Wavelets, as well as supporting the production of a shadow play of this story.
Art for Guernsey turned this story into a film to support the launch of the Children’s Library, a project made in collaboration with the Youth Commission.
Some of the artist's work is currently on display at the Guille-Alles Library and will remain so for today [Friday] and Saturday.
"Myths to me are like an invisible thread which stretches back through time and links collective experience," said Ms Buchanan. "These new paintings are about moments of magic and realisation and times when you remember how incredible it is to be here right now - but also how your experience is universal.
"I am thrilled to work on a project which has been able to align art and narrative and engage young story writers through the incredible WriteStuff competition, and to exhibit in the Guille-Allès Library which keeps so many stories within its walls. This exhibition is beautifully curated by Art for Guernsey and I am so happy to be working with them again."
The first-place prizewinning stories from the WriteStuff competition are being displayed as a part of the exhibition.
"Art for Guernsey is delighted to curate this exhibition in a context that aligns the visual and literary arts, in collaboration with the Guernsey Literary Festival," said Art For Guernsey Founder David Ummels.
"As an artist, Charlie has so much to offer in terms of helping us to interpret myths and legends and to revisit those interpretations with a real authentic twist. Her art is deeply poetic and resonates highly with the local audience because she has a genuine love for Guernsey's beautiful scenery and history.
"We are also so pleased to be back at the Guille-Allès Library, such an important and friendly place for the arts in Guernsey. The team worked really hard on the exhibition, which is intended to be the ideal preparation platform for a much bigger show of Charlie's art in the near future."
