Final days of Japanese exhibition

Tuesday 24 December 2019

One of Guernsey Museum’s longest and most ambitious exhibitions exploring the island's links with Japan will come to an end on New Year's Eve.

'To Japan and Back Again: How a Corner of Guernsey Turned Japanese' opened on Friday 24 May this year and was originally due to finish in September, only to be extended due to popular demand and flexibility within the exhibition schedule.

The exhibition explores the connections between Guernsey and Japan, using as a focal point the Japanese House and Temple which were built in Saumarez Park. Inside the re-constructed house display, visitors can see the original paper screens which have been carefully restored for the occasion.

Items for the display include original objects from the Japanese House and Temple and have been provided by the museum and a private collection.

A host of other examples of the decorative arts of Japan have also been loaned by other island collectors, while the main gallery is complemented by a display about Japanese Manga in the museum foyer.

Elsewhere at Candie, two other exhibitions are also finishing on 31 December.

‘William Le Lacheur: The Land He Loved’ by Frances Lemmon is a celebration of the Guernseyman from the Forest who became a hero in Costa Rica.

The current Timewarp in the Discovery Room, The Spirit of Baker’s Bazaar, is another that will finish at the end of the year, to be replaced by a Coding Room.

The Museum will close on 31 December and reopen on Friday 24 January.
