The election team has started totting up the votes which, by the end of the day, will determine which 38 people will represent the island as States Deputies.

The count began at 09:00 and is expected to last into the evening, with thousands of ballot papers to go through.

All candidates were invited to attend the start of the count, but only seven of the 119 arrived in time.

"I was hoping to see a lot more candidates," said Central Returning Officer, Gordon Snell. "I thought being a new count they would all be here, but I'm happy to see all seven of you."

Throughout the day, each candidate will be given the chance to go into the counting area and be guided through the process. Members of the public will not be allowed into the counting venue.

The area has been split into two sections; one to deal with postal votes and the other to deal with ballots from the polling stations.

Each ballot is checked for damage before being put in a scanner, which takes note of the ovals that have been filled in.

The scanners have been brought over by three people from the UK, who will be available at the count throughout the day to assist with technical issues. They are classed as critical workers so did not need to self-isolate in line with travel regulations, but have been tested for covid-19 prior to arrival, on arrival and every day since. As a precaution, they are wearing masks and gloves in the counting area.

It's not yet clear what time the results will be finalised, but the announcement is expected some time this evening.
