A Festive Message from the Bailiff

Tuesday 25 December 2018

The 'most wonderful time of the year' is always one for reflection, alongside looking forward to what ever excitement a new year might hold, so the island's Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas, sat down with Express to give his Christmas thoughts.

"The carol services and Christmas concerts I have enjoyed this year have prompted me to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, the message of peace and goodwill to all - the Christian message of love and hope. It has real meaning this year with division and discord all around.

"My thoughts this Christmas time are with those who are in sickness or difficulties or separated from those they love. I wish to thank all those islanders who work hard supporting our community and caring for the vulnerable and the less fortunate among us, in particular those in frontline services, many of whom will be working as hard at Christmas as they do the rest of the year.  There are also the thousands of volunteers in charities and social and sporting associations who give generously of their time to help others.

"The actions of all of them help to make the island a special place for us all. If you are one of those wonderful people, I thank you for all that you do and for being an inspiration to everyone.

"In 2019 I hope even more people will be inspired to do what they can, especially as volunteers, to keep these islands special and to improve the quality of all our lives, especially for the less fortunate and the vulnerable.

"I am proud and privileged to be a Guernseyman and to live in this beautiful island.  I am delighted that so many people feel the same.  Together we can ensure that will always be so.

"I wish all islanders a Merry Christmas as well as peace and goodwill in 2019."
