An extra hour to eat and drink

Thursday 04 June 2020

As the Bailiwick successfully moves through phase 4 of its lockdown exit strategy, pubs, restaurants and cafes are going to be allowed to stay open an hour later - until 23:30.

Closing time for those businesses had been set at 22:30 last week when they were given permission to reopen but the extra hour will now be allowed from Friday 5 June.

Social distancing and other guidelines must still be followed, including increased hand hygiene and contact details must be taken by the business.

Pubs, cafes and restaurants were allowed to open from the Saturday just passed, however pub-goers could only order drinks with food initially. That changed from Monday when people could order drinks without food - but only table service is allowed.

Some pubs haven't yet reopened as they didn't have fresh stocks in and were unable to guarantee social distancing measures could be adhered to at such short notice.

More are now saying they will reopen with the added bonus that they can stay open until 23:30, from Friday 5 June.

Deputy Heidi Soulsby, President of the Committee for Health & Social Care said the time change has been granted because of how well everyone has stuck to the measures so far.

“When we entered Phase 4 last week, we said that we’d keep the licensing hours under review. It was important that we adopted an initially cautious approach to enable businesses and the public to adapt to the new requirements.

"The response from both industry and the public has been fantastic over this first week and as a result we’re able, with the support of Law Enforcement and Public Health, to extend opening hours. Not only does this move us, as a community, ever closer back to “normal”, it will also assist hospitality at this difficult time.”
