Everest Challenge underway!

Thursday 08 March 2018

There is still time to get entries for the 25th Le Murier Everest Challenge.

The annual fundraiser is back for its 25th year raising money for the school's residential education programme, and will take place at the school on Thursday 8, Friday 9 and Saturday 10 March.

This year the organisers want to raise £25,000 to coincide with the 25-year anniversary.

Teams of six to eight people of any age or ability are invited to complete a minimum of 15 ascents of the school’s climbing wall in one hour. The intention is that the combined teams’ climbs will total the height of Everest (8,848 metres) by the end of the three days.

Entry is free, but each team raises money through sponsorship. All climbing equipment will be provided by the school and instruction will be given by qualified staff.

Fantastic trips supported by fantastic event

"We have so many fantastic trips planned for this year, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a trip to Wales, a trip to Lihou and our annual camping in the summer. It is fantastic that Healthspan has sponsored the Everest Challenge again, it means that we can continue to raise money for this fantastic and worthwhile cause and aim to reach our special 25th year target of £25,000," Gary Dovey, Outdoor Education and Learning outside the Class Teacher at Le Murier, said.

"It’s difficult to pick out just one trip to highlight from the last 25 years because they are all very important in very different ways. However, taking students to the New Forest a few years ago to do their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award expedition was a particular achievement.

"It was only the second time a group from the school had done their silver expedition, the first one being many years ago. We hope to build on that success with a third group doing their silver award in 2018.”

Tim Pethick, Healthspan Chief Executive Officer said: “There are only a handful of charity events that can boast they’ve spanned decades in Guernsey and it’s a huge achievement for Gary and his team of organisers to be holding an event for the 25th year running.

“Healthspan is proud to sponsor an event that broadens the educational experiences of its pupils and allows them to take part in activities which will be invaluable for their future development. It’s important that we give back to the community to improve wellbeing, which is at the core of Healthspan’s ethos. Encouraging islanders to get out and be active in any way possible is something that we want to continue to get behind and support locally.”

All slots for Thursday 8 March are fully booked, but there’s still availability on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 March.
