Escape room teams needed for bellringing fundraiser

An appeal has been made for teams to participate in escape rooms to help fund the installation of bellringing simulators at Elizabeth College.

The Town Church Bellringers have teamed up with Elizabeth College to host the escape rooms, which include one under the granite steps of the "iconic College building".

Bellringing practice techniques have progressed over the years and two simulator bells have recently been installed in the Town Church tower which connect to specialised software.

“The simulators have the big wheel and rope just like the real bells, but the weight is just a lump of concrete. They are light and easy to ring so are perfect for beginners and smaller users,” said Town Church Tower Captain, Duncan Loweth.

“The software can play the sound of the other bells ringing so one ringer can practice the musical piece they’re learning before having a go with real ringers on practice night. They can also be used for practicing 12 bell methods for off-island trips, which we can’t otherwise do on island because no towers have 12 bells.”

Six simulators have been installed at Elizabeth College, which can be rung as a light peal of bells. Half the funding was provided by the Friends of Elizabeth College. It is hoped the escape rooms will provide the other half of the funds.

“We have run our ‘Infiltrate HQ’ escape room at Elizabeth College previously, but only for one week initially. We have set it back up this summer for teams who missed it the first time, We have also created a brand new room set in a unique space under the main granite steps of the iconic College building,” said Mr Loweth.

Mr Loweth continued: “We are currently about 11 teams shy of raising the amount we need so if anyone hasn’t yet booked in, please do by emailing us at or sending us a message on Facebook.”

The Town Church Bellringers have run several escape rooms preiously.

“Some escape rooms require you to solve a puzzle to unlock the door to escape, while in others the objective is to solve a mystery or find a magical potion. In our rooms, we stay with you so you can ask for hints and we can nudge you in the right direction if you get a bit stuck,” said Mr Loweth.

Mr Loweth continued: “Our latest room, Hovel Heist, is our eighth original escape room, which have all been highly praised by players. Previous escape rooms, run at Town Church, have funded the training equipment we have installed and now tops up our Youth Scholarship Fund.”

The Youth Bellringing Fund which awards ringing scholars £100 per term if they attend practice and Sunday service ring each week during term time.
