Parents show concern for child's education

Wednesday 13 May 2020

A third of parents are "very concerned" about the impact corona virus has had on their child's education, according to a new report based on a survey completed by a sample of residents in the Crown Dependencies.

Island Global Research surveyed 1,684 residents last week - 685 of whom are living in Guernsey.

The parents with children in full time education were asked about their experiences of home schooling so far and how it has impacted their families.

The results showed that those with older children were more concerned, with some noting worries about exams as well as post-education employment opportunities. But, many others did show their concerns about their child's social and academic growth.

More than half of parents who are employed or self-employed said home schooling is having an effect on their jobs, with 21% having to work flexible hours and 6% unable to work at all.

However, the majority of respondents were very appreciative for the support from teachers, with most students being able to access resources recommended by their schools.

"The school has been brilliant and provided school work online," said one respondent. "My child has been able to stick as best they can to their daily timetable."

Another commented: "It's more stressful having the kids here whilst trying to work, but equally it's lovely having them around!."
