E-Bikes healthier and more convenient - user survey

Wednesday 07 November 2018

60% of people who purchased an e-bike through the States subsidy scheme now use it as their number one way to travel, according to a survey of the users.

The survey has been conducted three months down the line from the end of the scheme, and Environment & Infrastructure, the committee behind it, have said they are pleased with the results.

Statistics also showed the average mileage of the e-bike users was 275 miles over the three months, that 60% of users said they felt healthier, and 55% found it more convenient than driving.

Deputy Mark Dorey, Vice President of E&I, said: "The results from this second survey are encouraging and suggest that the e-bike subsidy scheme continues to be successful in changing behaviours. The scheme is definitely having and will continue to have an impact in reducing traffic volumes, reducing emissions and helping people to feel more active and fitter.

"On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this second survey. Their assistance is invaluable in helping us to monitor the impact of this initiative."

The majority of riders have been using the bikes for both leisure and commuting two to four days a week, which E&I have said will help to reduce the number of emissions and also open up other car parking spaces across the island. Then it also said the fact users were feeling healthier was delivering on the States objective of improving public health.

Finally, the survey found there was an equal split among males and females using the books, and more than half were over 51, which, according to E&I, showed "that the e-bike is a viable and attractive option for both male and female mid-age and older adults to take up cycling and so adopt a healthier lifestyle."

In 2019 the Committee will undertake the one year survey which will identify the actual outcomes from the intervention in order to assess its effectiveness. The Committee will publish those findings in due course.
