Vahey returns as poll topper

Thursday 28 July 2022

St Peter Port elected two new douzeniers yesterday - Lisa Vahey and Christopher Hudson.

Mrs Vahey, pictured top, topped the poll to regain a seat which she previously held between April 2016 and December 2017.

The unsuccessful candidates were Kathryn Collins, Christophe Nicolle and Richard Ellis.

After the result was declared last night, Mrs Vahey told Express: "I'm so pleased to have been voted back into the St. Peter Port Douzaine and I can't wait to get stuck in.

"My first priority is to get more engagement from the voters and get a bigger turnout for the next election."

The turnout yesterday was disappointingly low even by the standards of modern parochial by-elections.

Only 129 voters took part - representing a turnout of just 1.7%.

Ahead of the election, Mrs Vahey said she wanted to work on communication between the Douzaine and parishioners.

"I would like to return to the Douzaine to put the word out on what they do: it’s more than hedges and streams," she said.

"I would like to be involved in making sure that there is more communication from the Douzaine, promoting themselves and what they do, using the various media that is available.

"I believe more communication will lead to more engagement from parishioners and therefore a better understanding of what is needed in the parish.

"I would also like to see more cross-parish communication and co-operation on mutually beneficial projects."

Yesterday's by-election was required to fill seats recently vacated by Jacquie Gallienne and Tim Bush.
