Douzaine not responsible for abandoned vehicles at Vale Castle

Monday 18 July 2022

A Vale parish constable has asked islanders not to blame the Douzaine for abandoned vehicles in the car park opposite Vale Castle.

Senior Constable Richard Leale said that the public should report complaints of abandoned vehicles to the police or Traffic and Highway Services directly.

“We are receiving one or two complaints on a regular basis, particularly in relation to a lorry full of rubbish which appears to have been abandoned,” he said.

Mr Leale continued: “The lorry had previously been abandoned with rubbish but was removed temporarily before being left in the same condition again. We believe it may be someone who is leaving the island periodically and then collecting the vehicle when they return.

“We have the same authority as the public when it comes to abandoned vehicles. All we can do is pass the complaint; it would be best for the public to make the complaint directly to the relevant authority.”

Mr Leale said that the constables do what they can to assist the public.

"Sometimes it appears that the action we think is appropriate isn't taken, for whatever reason, and we know parishioners and other users get angry when this happens,” he said.

"I will be contacting Environment to see whether we can get a better system in place to ensure everyone plays by the rules, which have been put there to benefit everyone."

The car park was previously completely unregulated but, following representations from the parish, was made into a 23-hour disc park.

Junior Constable, Bill Cohu, added that getting action on reports of abandoned vehicles “could be frustrating”.

"We've seen examples at the Vale Castle where tickets have been issued. The area is a 23-hour disc parking zone, but apparently this is not followed up. We have made Environment aware of these issues,” he said.

Mr Coho provided an example of a vehicle with at least three parking tickets. Despite the tickets, the vehicle has remained at the popular venue, where spaces can be in demand.

"Please don’t blame the Douzaine for this. We have tried, but the problem remains," he said.
