Donkey Derby returns to the park

Saturday 17 August 2019

The annual Donkey Derby, which has now been running for more than 50 years, gets underway at Saumarez Park today.

The event will be open between 11:30 and 17:30, with the first race taking place at 13:00.

Although entry to the derby is free, drivers will have to pay a £5 fee to park in the Home Field carpark.

All profits will go towards the Lions Club of Guernsey which organises the event. The club uses its funds to support a number of local projects which have, in the past, included a Riding for the Disabled group, refurbishment of community centres, the purchase of a Channel Island Air Search aircraft and the rebuilding of the Lions MIND Centre at the Town Arsenal.

As well as numerous donkey races, there will be charity stalls dotted around the park, a refreshment tent with a licensed bar and a tote tent to bet on the races.

The Guernsey Majorettes will be performing and there will be gentle donkey rides on offer for children, along with fairground rides.
