Do you know what the recommended drinking guidelines are?

Sunday 09 October 2022

The Health Improvement Commission is encouraging participation in a drinking guidelines survey to gauge local awareness of those guidelines and general drinking behaviours.

Its first survey in 2020 found that 86% of approximately 400 respondents were unaware of drinking guidelines.

The Commission want anyone aged 18 or over to contribute again, regardless of whether they drink alcohol or not. The survey is open now and will close at the end of month.

It is hoped that public awareness of safe drinking behaviours will have improved since 2020.

Anyone who takes part will be in with a chance of winning a £140 voucher to spend at either Iris and Dora, Guernsey Karting, Up Climbing Guernsey or Outdoor Guernsey.

Andrea Nightingale, the Commission’s Substance Use Lead, indicated that public awareness in 2020 was lackluster.

“We know that the majority of adults drink alcohol - it’s embedded in our culture - but it’s important to empower people to know how much we’re drinking and whether our drinking might be harming our health,” she said.

“Over the past two years we’ve been delivering a creative campaign to give people the information, knowledge and skills to manage their alcohol consumption in a healthy way.

We’ve created challenges for the public to take part in, filmed fun videos, used local familiar faces to help spread the message, distributed handy tools to help measure intake, and even had the recommended guidelines driving round the island on the back of a bus. The campaign has won several awards - now it’s time to see what impact that’s made.”
