Distance learning has been a “significant logistical and educational challenge”

Parents should have now received guidance on distance learning while the schools remain closed.

A learning programme has been produced for 20 educational settings and is in the process of being rolled out.

It follows the news that schools will “much more likely than not” remain closed to all schools next week, as Guernsey heads towards week two or lockdown.

Positive cases of corona virus have now been found across 10 educational settings.

• Haute Capelles

• Grammar

• Amherst

• Elizabeth College

• Elizabeth College Junior School

• The Ladies' College

• Maylands

• Little Bears

Parents are not expected to take on the role of teacher, and the distance learning programme has been created to encourage as much independent learning as possible.

“I want to say a big thank you to all our staff across education,” said Education, Sport & Culture President Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, “for their hard work and effort preparing to deliver our distance learning programme.”

Distance learning can be difficult for families juggling work and childcare, and it has been stressed that allowances should be made for an adjustment to this sudden situation.

“It’s important for parents and carers to know that there is no expectation for them to replace classroom teachers,” said Deputy Dudley-Owen.

Parents will have lots of questions regarding distance learning again, and ESC has published its guidance online. 

“It’s easy to say, but please don’t be hard on yourselves,” said Deputy Dudley-Owen.

“School staff will be available to guide and assist parents so please get in contact if you need help,” she concluded.
