Beau Cinema is hosting a dementia friendly film screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel film this afternoon as part of Dementia Action Week.
The event is free and bookings were taken only from those people living with dementia, their families and carers.
Being a dementia friendly screening means that the environment will be relaxed, ensuring everybody feels more comfortable, with clear signage and lighting a little brighter than might otherwise be expected in a cinema.
Dementia Friendly Guernsey said, additionally, there will be an interval midway through the film to allow people to move around and to enjoy an ice cream kindly provided by Guernsey Dairy.
Those watching the film will also be encouraged to talk during the break as "social interaction, discussing the film and reminiscing is important to those living with dementia where stimulus helps slow down development."
A number of dementia champions and Beau Sejour staff will also be on hand to provide assistance. Julie Bulpitt is one.
“We are very grateful to Beau Sejour for their help in providing this special screening of such a popular film. Dementia Action Week is a UK initiative to highlight how we can all make a real difference to those people living with dementia so that they may do so well. Going to the cinema is one of those everyday activities that can continue to be enjoyed by those living with dementia. While the facts of an outing might be forgotten, the emotional memory remains in tact”.
Sam Herridge, Head of Recreation Services which includes Beau Sejour said: “The team up at Beau Sejour is always keen to find new ways it can provide and extend the Centre’s services and facilities to the local community – that truly fit and adapt to their needs. We’re really proud to be supporting this event, and are looking forward to meeting customers that may not have visited us in a while.”
