Vaccination appointments considered essential travel

Tuesday 16 February 2021

People are allowed to use the bus service in order to get to and from vaccination appointments, after original States advice was clarified.

Last week, CT Plus was instructed by the States not to allow people on their way to or from a vaccination on board their buses. That rule has now been clarified after further discussions between the operator and the States.

CT Plus is currently running an essential only travel service. During lockdown you can only use the bus service for essential journeys, and face coverings are mandatory when travelling on them.

Buses are only offering limited seats to enable social distancing. We’re also being told to expect drivers asking questions about the purpose of passengers' journeys.

It comes after an 82-year-old lady was stopped from getting a bus home from her vaccine appointment at the weekend, despite her wearing a mask. A lift home was found after St John Ambulance were contacted, however it sparked conversation on social media.

When asked why CT Plus was initially instructed not to accept people heading to and from vaccine appointments at the latest media briefing, States CEO and Civil Contingencies Authority Advisor Paul Whitfield gave a short reply.

“Certain things have improved the situation, for example, the wearing of face coverings will now be mandatory on public transport.” We’ve asked for an official response from the States of Guernsey.

CT Plus’ bus service continues to run for essential journeys, including; to and from the shops, to doctors appointments, now to Covid vaccine appointments and for essential workers.

"CT Plus is working closely with the States of Guernsey and following their advice with regard to services," said a spokesperson for CT Plus.

A joint statement has now been released by Traffic & Highway services and CT Plus:
