Countdown begins to General Election

Monday 03 August 2020

The States have released a guide for anyone thinking of standing for deputy in this October's General Election.

It sets out details, rules and key dates as well as information on the role of a States Member and links to relevant legislation all candidates will need to be aware of.

The guide will also direct candidates to the government support available for them, including a printed booklet of two-page manifestos which will be sent out to all voters.

“This guide will give those thinking of standing in the General Election a good overview of the key facts they need to know, from the formal rules around the election process, to information relevant to being a people’s deputy," explained the Registrar-General of Electors, Colette Falla. "I would encourage anyone standing to familiarise themselves with this information so they go into the election period fully aware and prepared for what is involved.”

In addition to the guide, the States will hold two presentations for prospective candidates, where Ms Falla and other relevant officials will be available to answer questions. These will be held at Beau Sejour at 18:00 on 19 and 26 August.

Nomination forms are now available to download online, but can only be submitted from 1 September at 09:00 and must be in by 16:00 on 4 September.

In order to stand for election, candidates must be registered on the electoral roll, which closes on 21 August. Voters must also be signed up by the same date.

The full guide is available to read on election2020.gg.
