Record-breaking Swimarathon success celebrated

Monday 08 November 2021

Citizens Advice Guernsey and the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation are the main beneficiaries of this year's record-breaking Skipton Swimarathon.

The event, which is the largest community fundraising event in the island, saw 2,500 swimmers raise more than £80,000 for local good causes.

Organisers handed out platinum, gold, silver and bronze awards to corporate groups and clubs that supported the event, which is in its 45th year.

The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation will use the donation from the Swimarathon to fund a year's upkeep of one of its flats next to Southampton Hospital, which is available to families from the Bailiwick with children receiving treatment at the hospital.

Citizens Advice Guernsey will put the money towards supporting the development of a new IT system, including a telephony suite, to allow volunteers to improve services to a growing number of clients.

“The corporate award scheme inspires local companies to get involved with the fundraising event,” said Skipton’s Commercial Manager, Aaron Walden.

“The ethos of the event is all about community and doing your part and it is the one event in Guernsey’s calendar that can involve the whole island. We are thrilled to have honoured all these recipients today and thank them wholeheartedly for their efforts.”

The Swimarathon was first run in 1977 under the chairmanship of the late Jurat Harry Bisson. It is organised by the Lions Club of Guernsey and the Guernsey Round Table and sponsored by Skipton. The event is mainly held at Beau Sejour with students at Baubigny Schools swimming in their own school pool.

This year's top fundraisers - NLG and St Sampson's High School - received a platinum prize after raising more than £2,500 each.
