Green light for Connaught Care Home works

Phase two of a £1.88million project to extend Alderney's only designated care home has been given the go ahead, subject to final approval by Guernsey's Policy & Resources Committee.

With Connaught Care Home's loft conversion almost complete, States of Alderney Members have agreed to the next step - the groundwork for a new extension.

As long as the proposals are approved by P&R, work on the grounds and substructure will begin in mid-March.

Phase two includes piling, foundations, drainage and work to the home's ground floor and boundary walls. It is expected to take about five months to complete.

The extension itself is yet to be approved, but the island's Policy & Finance Committee has recommended the States approve £1.3million to fund phase three.

If it's given the green light, the extension will provide an extra 13 residential rooms for long term or respite care, along with communal spaces, clinic rooms, offices and other facilities.

The entire project, which is expected to cost about £1.88m, is due to be finished early next year.

Besides the Mignot Memorial Hospital - which provides 14 long-term nursing care beds and eight acute beds - the Connaught is the only professional residential facility.
