College of FE pupils perform with distinction

Thursday 13 August 2020

More than half of the College of Further Education's full-time Level 3 students achieved Distinction* or Distinction grades in their end of year results.

Students faced a nervous wait for their results this morning - especially when you consider that the college usually knows what its pupils have achieved by the end of the summer term.

However it was another excellent set of results for the college, with a provisional pass rate of 94% for full-time Level 3 students, more than half of whom secured Distinction* or Distinction grades, which are roughly equivalent to A*/A in A Levels.

34% of those students are continuing to Higher Education, including Alice Hunt, 18, who achieved three Distinction Stars in her Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness course.

“It is really nice because I know that my hard work has paid off,” she said. “I was a bit apprehensive because you know what you have done and what you are predicted, it is just how [the exam boards] are going to interpret it.”

College of FE Principal Louise Misselke said there had been little difference between the teacher assessment grades and the moderated results.

"That means we can be very confident that our grades are a true reflection of what our students deserve," she said. "The year group collecting their results this summer have really been outstanding students. To have managed to achieve what they have in a global pandemic and turn up today all smiles and really positive about their future is really humbling to see."

Many students are now preparing to take their next steps into employment or higher education - either locally or in the UK.

Students heading into the final year of their Level 3 courses also received results today, including Jenny Naftel, 17, who secured two Distinction Stars in the first year of her Health & Social Care course.

“I would quite like to go into nursing and do the training on-island, so this course seems like a logical path to that career route."

Lockdown forced many students to rethink the way they study, and Miss Naftel said there had been some benefits to that.

“I think it has been quite positive for me because I have been more disciplined and more independent.”
