A recent rescue of five children from the K2 rock at Grandes Rocques highlights the importance of sea safety, according to Guernsey’s Harbourmaster.
Captain David Baker published a sea safety message after the incident which happened on Thursday (3 August).
“Running into danger at sea can have severe and life-threatening consequences,” he said.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of being aware of your surroundings and enjoying the waters around Guernsey responsibly. Given the precarious conditions in which the children were rescued, this incident could have been a lot worse.”
On the evening of 3 August five children found themselves stranded on the K2 rock. The St Peter Port Inshore Lifeboat was called out to help them.
Due to rough sea conditions the lifeboat couldn’t get close enough to the rock for the children to climb aboard, so each child had to jump into the sea and then be pulled into the lifeboat.
“The crew of the Inshore Lifeboat demonstrated incredible skill and determination in completing a difficult rescue mission in challenging sea conditions as the light was fading," said Captain Barker.
“We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful waters and coastline, but please be safe. Consider the risks to yourself and to others, have a plan for getting back to shore and keep in mind what the weather and tide are doing.”
