A local film club is starting off its 2021 screenings with two contrasting but complementary examples of world cinema.

Wynter Tyson, creator and organiser of Clameur Du Cinema, has chosen films which he hopes will showcase cinema's ability to bring people together.

The first film will be martial arts classic Dragon Inn, a 1967 film in which a band of warriors join together to protect the children of an executed general.

Directed by King Hu, the film is a "fantastic" example of the highly stylised 'wuxia' genre of martial arts films.

A week later, CDC will be presenting Goodbye, Dragon Inn, a 'touching tribute to movie going' that follows the attendees and employees of a cinema that is screening the original Dragon Inn on its final night before closing.

"Following a year when the world has, necessarily, closed its borders, cinema remains a fantastic way to broaden our horizons," Mr Tyson said.

"These films are hugely influential examples of world cinema and a wonderful way to escape into art."

Dragon Inn (rated PG) is being screened at the Mallard Cinema at 19:30 on 19 January, and Goodbye Dragon Inn (rated 12) is being screened at 19:30 on 26 January. Tickets are available from the Clameur Du Cinéma website.
