Case numbers rise above 300 with outbreak "at very crucial stage"

There are now 306 known active cases of Covid-19 in the Bailiwick, with the CCA Chairman saying the current outbreak "is at a very crucial stage".

The States Assembly has today debated and retrospectively approved the Civil Contingencies Authority's emergency regulations, which saw the island go into an almost immediate lockdown 10 days ago following the emergence of four unexplained positive cases.

The numbers of cases have, as expected, gone up every day since. The latest stats show that there have been 30 more positive cases and one recovery, taking the overall figures up from 277 active cases to 306.

Five of those are in hospital, one of whom is in the ICU.

Speaking this afternoon in the States, CCA Chairman Peter Ferbrache said the next few days will reveal a lot about how widespread the virus is.

"This particular outbreak is at a very crucial stage. We will know better hopefully just this side of the weekend."

Deputy Ferbrache reiterated that the authority does not know the source or sources of the current outbreak. Following questions in the States, he made a commitment that any self-isolation breaches "will be reported and will be dealt with in the normal way".
