Café Amiti puts 'community' at its heart

Sunday 25 November 2018

Four months after new management took over the café at la Nouvelle Maritaine, Café Amiti has become a social hub for the extra-care developments' residents, friends and family, they said.

The development is run by Guernsey Housing Association (GHA) and Nour and Jill Sayed Ahmed took over the café in July, following its temporary closure.

Since then the café has experienced a radical change with a new menu and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Mr Sayed Ahmed is originally from the Middle East, where food is seen as an important way of bringing people together, and his aim was to replicate this spirit at Café Amiti.

“Nour and I have enjoyed getting to know the residents, families and locals and being able to provide a space for community and togetherness over a good plate of food. People have been so welcoming and we hope to build upon what we have already done.” said Ms Sayed Ahmed.

“We truly believe food is at the centre of friendship and community and we’d like to see more people open to experiencing something different to their usual weekend plans or lunchtime and evening takeaways."

GHA Chief Executive Steve Williams added: “Closing the café earlier this year was not an easy decision to make but our residents are now benefiting from Nour and Jill’s dedication. With Nour and Jill at the helm, the café has transformed and it really makes a difference to everyone involved when people are clearly passionate about what they do.

“The café is open to everyone and is a great resource for the community so we’d like to encourage anyone to come along and support Nour and Jill in their venture.”
