Buses free to use, all day today

Saturday 22 September 2018

On World Car Free Day, CT Plus is letting us use all local day time bus services for free.

The charity Living Streets, which supports pedestrian safety initiatives in the island, is also encouraging people to leave their car behind and to get the bus to wherever they need to go today.

"We are encouraging islanders to take part by leaving their car at home and coming into Town (or The Bridge) by bus," the charity said.

"Our bus service is amazing these days - good frequency, good timing and with the bus app you can see exactly where the bus is. Make sure your children have the kids Puffin pass so that they can travel free. No stress trying to find parking or keeping your eye on your watch in case you over run your parking spot. Please give it a try!"

The international awareness day is also referred to as "In Town without my car day"and is held on September 22 every year regardless of what day it falls on, which is why this year it is on a Saturday when many people do enjoy a day off from work. Living Streets said that actually means it is an ideal opportunity for many people to try and leave their car at home for a day.

"This year it's a Saturday so we think it's an ideal opportunity for families to come to Town to shop using the bus service - which is really terrific these days. Back in the early 2000's the island used to celebrate the day - spearheaded by Dr. David Jeffs who was the Public Health Chief in those days. What do you think? Are you willing to give it a try?!"

The Committee for Environment & Infrastructure is also supporting the day with its backing of free bus travel. E&I said that's "in order to encourage people to try the bus and see just how convenient it is for commuting, shopping, visiting family and friends or simply explore the Island."

Deputy Barry Brehaut, President of E&I said, "there has never been a better time to try the scheduled bus service and it is hoped that by offering free travel this Saturday, many will take the opportunity to try the service and appreciate that it offers a viable alternative for some of their journeys.”
