"Bring questions and experiences to share"

Guerns Against Discrimination are hosting an evening of music, spoken word and open discussion this evening ahead of the States debate on the discrimination law next week.

The recently-formed organisation was set up by a group of local young people to canvass for the introduction of legislation against discrimination.

If proposals are approved in the States Assembly next week, they will make it unlawful for employers and service providers to discriminate on the basis of race, carer status or disability. This would add to the current law against gender discrimination in the workplace.

"There's been a lot of talk about 'Guernsey Together', but that means everyone - not certain groups more than others," said Pieter Durman of the group. "If we want to be 'Guernsey Together', we need to make sure we put in legislation that is all of Guernsey together, not parts of Guernsey ahead.

"What this legislation will be doing is enshrining into law what we hope people and businesses are doing already. It shouldn't have to change attitudes. Where it necessitates a change in attitude, it's vital this legislation is doing that because that's something that's wrong in the community."

This evening's event aims to invite discussion on the topic and is open to anyone, whether they agree with the plans or not.

"Bring questions and experiences to share with fellow Guerns and Deputies," added Mr Durman. "This will be a fantastic opportunity to engage with these issues in an open, inclusive environment.

"This event is a week prior to the States debate on discrimination legislation on 15 July, so it is vital we all engage in this discussion now."

The music, spoken word and discussion night will get underway at 19:00 at the Cock and Bull.
