Gwen De La Mare, a Waitrose Partner from Guernsey, swapped the shopping aisle for the bowling green to take part in this year’s European Bowls Championships, achieving a bronze medal.
Ms De La Mare has played bowls for more than 20 years and has competed all over the world.
Waitrose supported her to take part in the championships as well as sponsoring the event and providing food for all the teams taking part.
“I didn’t know until close to the tournament that I was going to be competing so I’m grateful to Waitrose & Partners for being flexible and allowing me the week off to compete in the competition,” she said.

Ms De La Mare took part in the event as part of a mixed team named ‘European Select’ consisting of players from a variety of nations. The team was thrilled to win bronze.
Kevin Stone, Branch Manager at Waitrose & Partners Rohais, said: “We always make sure that our sponsorships are meaningful to our Partners and the local community so it was great to sponsor the European Bowls Championships which was a fantastic event for the island and for Gwen, who is so passionate about bowls.
“We look to support our Partners in any way we can so we’re very pleased that she could take part in the event and her bronze medal win is a very impressive achievement.”
The Championships were held in the island on 22 to 27 September with players from 15 nations involved.
