Body recovered from Havelet

Sunday 09 February 2020

A man’s body has been recovered from the water near Havelet, Guernsey Police have announced.

While it hasn't yet been formally identified, Police suggested in their statement they believe it may be the man who went missing last month, Matthew Bourgaize.

He has been missing for four weeks, after walking out of the mental health facility at the Oberlands on 11 January.

Police said they had already spoken to Mr Bourgaize’s family because “they understood there would be speculation”.

The full statement said: “Earlier this morning officers retrieved the body of a male from the water near Havelet. We are currently awaiting formal identification but understand there will be speculation.

“We have informed the family of Mr Bourgaize and ask that their privacy is respected at this time. We will make a further announcement once formal identification has taken place, which will be in the coming days.”

More to come...
