“Bobbies on the beat”: Officers deployed where demand is greatest

Saturday 16 July 2022

Bailiwick Law Enforcement has confirmed that police officers are “deployed where the demand and risk is greatest”.

The response came after Deputy Lester Queripel questioned whether Law Enforcement intended to “reinstate bobbies on the beat” in the States’ Assembly. The President of the Committee for Home Affairs said he was sure officers were “managed effectively”.

“Visual policing is very important, particularly around nighttime economy. This is an operational matter and how the Chief of Police deploys his staff,” he said.

“I am sure there are officers on the beat, and I am sure they are managed effectively according to risk.

"Whilst we have suffered around the number of police officers, I am pleased to say on a recruitment front we are doing a lot better... we have also been assisted through secondment placements from officers from the UK."

In response to an Express enquiry, Deputy Chief Officer, Phil Breban, echoed Deputy Prow’s comments.

“Police officers are deployed where the demand and risk is greatest. An example of this will be our approach to policing the night time economy, where a high profile, high visibility presence is appropriate,” he said.

“Such demands and risks constantly change and are continually reviewed by officers, and, for example, lead to additional deployments around events such as Seafront Sundays and public music events.

“We do seek to maintain a highly visible presence but this cannot be in all parts of the island all of the time.”
