Blue Monday rebranded to focus on Mental Health support

Purple Monday has been launched to chase away the Monday Blues and raise awareness for Guernsey Mind and the work it does to support people with mental health issues.

Blue Monday is supposedly the ‘saddest’ day of the year, due to a combination of bad weather, tight finances and the hangover from the festive period. It was originally publicised by Sky Travel to sell holidays, but has been rebranded locally by Skipton International to promote mental health and wellbeing.

“The third Monday in January has been dubbed to be the most depressing day of the year,” said Skipton Commercial Manager Aaron Walden, “so we wanted to brighten everyone’s day while recognising the mental health struggles that many people face.”

Skipton International have taken the opportunity to coincide its rebrand with ‘Purple Monday’ and have installed a series of inspirational quotes throughout Guernsey.

The collaborative initiative includes artwork by local artist Bekah Johnston, support from mental health campaigner Sian Jones, and co-ordination from Guernsey Mind.

“We’re very grateful to Skipton for their generous donation and support in creating awareness around mental health,” said Campaigns and Events Co-ordinator at Guernsey Mind, Maddy Diligent.

Sam Cochrane has experienced mental health issues in his life, and is a vocal supporter of mental health services in the island. He came down to show his support.

“Guernsey is a fantastic place to find support, campaigns like this are absolutely vital," he said. "It’s important for people to always know they can ask for, and get, support when they need it.”

Keep an eye out for the purple posters near Market Square, Admiral Park, Sir Charles Frossard House and Bailiwick Express.
