"Best ever cycling result" at 2018 Commonwealth Games

Thursday 12 April 2018

Team Guernsey has achieved its "best ever cycling result" at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games thanks to the hard work and dedication of James McLaughlin.

He came sixth in the men’s individual time trial this week, having fought his way back to fitness following time out with injury.

He completed the 38.5km distance in a time of 49:54.12, just over a minute outside a medal position in sixth overall. Other Sarnian interest saw Seb Tremlett and Jack English finish 12th and 17th.

In the men's cross country mountain biking, Team Guernsey had three competitors, with James Roe coming 13th in 1:27.06, Mike Serafin 16th (Lap +9.43) and Andy Colver 20th (Lap + 9.20)

On the track and field 18 year old Alastair Chalmers has also impressed, running a new island under 20s record as well as securing a qualification time for the World Juniors in the 400m. He finished seventh in his heat in a time of 51.10 with the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association saying he "rose to the occasion" and "will be delighted with how he has performed."

Alastair and brother Cameron have been supported down under by their parents who cheered both on during what's been described by the boys' Guernsey Athletics' Club as "a very successful trip for the young 400m stars."

In Bowls, Todd Priaulx is departing the Gold Coast as Guernsey's highest ranked singles player in Commonwealth Games History after two victories at the Broadbeach Bowls Club.

In shooting, the Jory brothers finished in ninth position in the Queen's Pairs Prize competition. Adam and Peter then went on to compete in the individual events.

There has been one gold medal for Team Guernsey at the 2018 Commonwealth Games though, with the island's quiz team coming first in the Athlete's Village quiz!
