Bailiwick ready for Jubilee parties

Wednesday 01 June 2022

With a four day bank holiday weekend ahead, numerous public and private events are planned across the Bailiwick to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.

As Sovereign of the Channel Islands, she is also known in the islands as the Duke of Normandy.

Since acceding to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty has made five visits to the islands, including an overnight stay at Guernsey’s Government House.

The Lieutenant Governor, His Excellency Richard Cripwell, will host the largest public event over the Jubilee Weekend with an afternoon and evening of activities and entertainment planned at Government House on Saturday.

That event will include a community fete with family entertainment, children’s activities, a tea tent and live music before the focus switches to the ‘Party at the Palace’ from 17:30. Ahead of a live stream of the event from Buckingham Palace, there will be local performances to keep the atmosphere lively.

Before then, there are events at Castle Cornet. On Thursday, there will be a 21-gun salute at midday and the lighting of the Queen’s Jubilee Beacon during the evening. The beacon lighting will be streamed online for people to watch.

On Friday, a Jubilee Party will take place on L’Islet Common. It has been organised jointly by the Vale and St Sampson's douzaines. It features entertainment, competitions and refreshments.

On Sunday, St Peter Port seafront will be closed for a Platinum Jubilee Seafront Sunday organised by Art for Guernsey. There will be music, refreshments and activities for everyone to get involved with.

Some of the people behind previous Alderney Week events have planned several activities for people in the northern isle to enjoy across the four-day long weekend.

They include a Royal Art exhibition, a party on The Butes for the lighting of the Beacon, a screening of footage filmed during Her Majesty’s visits to Alderney in 1989 and 2001, a black tie dinner and cabaret evening and a party at the camp site.

Events are planned in Sark on Thursday and Sunday. The Jubilee Beacon will be lit on Thursday evening. And a street party is being held on Sunday lunchtime along the Avenue.
