Bailiwick Express appoints new Guernsey News Editor

Friday 08 October 2021

Bailiwick Express has confirmed that Matt Fallaize is to take over as its News Editor in Guernsey from next month.

Matt is a very well known figure in the local community following a twelve year career in politics as a States Deputy. Previously he worked in financial services, and then as a journalist in the local media, before running two small family businesses.

He takes over from Aaron Carpenter who has been appointed as Head of Sales, Brand, Digital Marketing and Social Media at Kings.

Express Editor, James Filleul, commented: “We launched in Guernsey back in 2018 as the first daily, professional, news service to start in the Bailiwick for nearly a quarter of a century; our plan was, and remains, to tell the stories which illustrate and explain island life, and to do that in way which was engaging, on modern multi-media platforms.

“Recently, Aaron has ably led the news team to deliver that, working online, in print, on social, and on radio - journalism can be an immensely challenging job, but also one which is deeply rewarding, and essential, in a well-functioning democracy.

"Matt is a very well known, experienced and connected figure in the local community, with a deep understanding of local issues - the Express team is looking forward to welcoming him on board, to help us continue to grow in Guernsey and tell the stories which islanders want, and need, to read.

Matt Fallaize added: “My roots are in journalism and my heart is in the public life of our islands. I’m thrilled to be combining these things in an exciting and challenging role with Bailiwick Express.

“Writing, editing and broadcasting news is a responsibility and a privilege. I’ll be working with  my new colleagues to build on Bailiwick Express’ growing reputation for journalism which is reliable, professional, fearless and balanced.

“I’ll be leading the news team in Guernsey across Bailiwick Express, Bailiwick Radio and Connect magazine. I look forward to working with, learning from and leading their team of dedicated professionals.”

Aaron leaves Express next month to move to Kings, where he will be responsible for the group’s brand strategy and communications. He commented:

“It has been an enormous privilege to work in Guernsey’s media. It has provided me with new experiences and the confidence to pursue the many opportunities it has presented me with.

"It has helped me to develop so much as a person in the last six years and I have worked with some incredible people who I will always be grateful to.

“The responsibility of communicating directly with the public should never be underestimated. The media must always work for the benefit of the community no matter what.

“Express has built an increasingly important role in Guernsey’s news scene. Matt will bring commitment, fearlessness, passion and empathy to the role, not to mention his encyclopaedic knowledge of local issues!"

"I am delighted to have such a talented successor who can power Express’ future growth while putting his own stamp on the role.”
