Bailiff's Disaster Relief Fund surpasses £365,000

Tuesday 05 April 2022

More than £365,000 has been donated to the Bailiff’s Disaster Relief Fund since Russian forces invaded Ukraine.

Bailiff Richard McMahon said he was “humbled” by the amount donated by islanders.

“People in Guernsey continue to show incredible generosity in their donations. It very much reflects the spirit of Guernsey people recognising a need to do what we can to help,” he said.

“I thank everyone who has contributed, whether a firm, charitable organisation or individual.”

The fund was established in 2001 to act as a focus for Guernsey donations in support of fund-raising initiatives prompted by the Disasters Emergency Committee, an English registered charity.

Mr McMahon said funds would be channelled through the charity to contribute to an effective humanitarian response to major disasters overseas.

“While in some areas of Ukraine the Russian forces may have pulled back, the humanitarian crisis continues with millions of people affected by the indiscriminate bombing of towns and cities,” continued Mr McMahon.

“Countless refugees forced to flee their homes because of the war still need our assistance to help to alleviate their suffering.”

£125,000 was transferred to the Disaster Emergency Committee on 25 March with a further £30,000 to be transferred this week.

Mr McMahon continued: “the Bailiff’s fund is not intended to discourage would be donors from making donations to local or other charities of their choice.

“The intention of the fund is to provide a convenient, easy way of donating and to assist donors who are uncertain whether to make a donation to one charity rather than another.”
