Back from Thailand to face string of charges

Tuesday 16 April 2019

Richard Swirlll has been remanded in custody after appearing in court for a number of charges.

The 57-year-old admitted counts of acting in a disorderly manner, not complying with court bail and importing a flick knife, when he appeared before the Magistrate's Court yesterday, but he denied committing an assault.

He had originally entered a not guilty plea for importing the weapon claiming he had "overlooked" it and had not realised he needed a license to bring it into the island, but he changed his plea as he had been aware that the knife was in his suitcase while travelling back from Thailand.

Judge Cherry McMillan adjourned the case until 24 April when Judge Graeme McKerrell will be Magistrate, although Mr Swirlll said he would then be making an application for a different Judge to hear his case.

The defendant will be sentenced on the guilty charges at the end of his trial for assault, which is due to take place on 10 May.
