Arts in Guernsey: What's happened and what's on

Friday 26 May 2023

Ballet and gardens 'bathed by the sea', there's plenty of artwork and performances coming up in Guernsey for people to enjoy.

Guernsey Arts takes a look at the next week in the creative scene:

The Royal Ballet Company presents Sleeping Beauty - Princess Royal Performing Arts Centre

The Sleeping Beauty holds a very special place in The Royal Ballet’s heart and history. It was the first performance given by the Company when the Royal Opera House reopened at Covent Garden in 1946 after World War II.

In 2006, this original staging was revived and has been delighting audiences ever since. Frederick Ashton famously cited the pure classicism of Marius Petipa’s 19th-century ballet as a private lesson in the atmospheric art and craft of choreography. Be swept away by Tchaikovsky’s ravishing music and Oliver Messel’s sumptuous fairytale designs with this true gem from the classical ballet repertory.

Conducted by: Koen Kessels

Choreography: Marius Petipa

Additional choreography: Derick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon

Production: Monica Mason and Christopher Newton after Ninette de Valois and Nicholas Sergeyev

Music: Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky

Original designs: Oliver Messel

Additional designs: Peter Farmer

Lighting designer: Mark Jonathan

Guernsey Arts Presents - 'Transfigurative' by Jamie Fallaize

Through influences such as Caravaggio and Goya, Jamie uses contemporary techniques and materials in exploring traditional figurative painting on his own journey of self-discovery and expression.

Each piece aims to speak to the viewer on an emotional and visceral level, pushing the boundaries of the medium and bringing each subject to life through rich layers of colour and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow.
Usual museum charges apply, free with a discovery pass.
