Company looking to power electric bike revolution

An electric bike-share initiative has been brought over to Guernsey.

The roads have never been busier and finding a place to park has never been harder, two problems the Director of EVie is trying to solve.

“We want to change people’s expectations and behaviour in how they use transport on the island,” said Gavin Breeze.

So, how does it work? Download the Freebike app through the App Store or Google Play, scan the bike bar code at one of the ‘stations’ and you’re off.

“We think there’s a big opportunity for people who might want to pop off and go for a swim at lunch,” said Mr Breeze.

“We know there are a number of people who drive in to town for 07:30 wait an hour-and-a-half to start work and then are reluctant to drive off during the day for fear of losing a parking space."

Pictured: The initiative has been championed by Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, who supported the business as it started with its intention to launch in Guernsey.

The company has gathered 12,000 subscribers in Jersey and is hoping to replicate the success here.

The rental costs £1 per 10 minutes for the first two hours; a half day costs £16 ;and a full day costs £19.

You can pick up an EVie bike from a number of stations on the island; once downloaded the app will locate the nearest bike to you.
