Alderney "a safe haven from the turmoil elsewhere"

Thursday 01 August 2019

Alderney's economy has continued to improve in recent months, with more businesses setting up shop in the northern isle.

The island's government has issued an upbeat update on the performance of its economy during the first three, and in some cases six, months of 2019.

At the end of March 2019, average earnings were up by 2.6% compared with March 2018, increasing from £24,736 to £25,386.

Nine new employers were registered in the island, taking the overall number from 125 to 134, and air passenger movements on key routes increased - the Southampton route by 3.7% and the Guernsey route by 1.7%.

‘The economic recovery reported over the last few quarters is continuing - and this is really good news," said Policy & Finance Chairman James Dent.

"The opportunities and lifestyles that our community offers is clearly attractive and is something we have been increasingly successful at promoting. Alderney welcomes those who would like to come and live on the island and who want to set up, or are in the process of setting up, businesses here.

"We must not lose the hard-earned momentum we now have. We are particularly grateful to all those in Guernsey who have been supporting us and who have indicated they want to work with us in order that ours, and the wider Bailiwick, economies can thrive."

Christian Harris, Chairman of the Tourism and Economic Development Committee, said they were trying to take a positive view of international developments.

"Let me look ahead: Brexit and the uncertainties that go with it, seen by many in the UK as challenges, are seen here in Alderney as opportunities," he said.

"Inevitably we will not be immune from all outside actions. There are, however, already those who see us as a safe haven from the turmoil’s elsewhere and who are investing."
