Alderney Nomads hope to "leave a legacy"

The Alderney Nomads will be aiming to create a "legacy" when they run onto the pitch for today's Muratti semi-final against Jersey.

With the addition of a couple of home-grown youths who now play in Guernsey and some players returning from England for the match, the squad is the same as that which has performed so well in the Priaulx League this season.

"Our players are really disciplined in their shape and set pieces and will help each other do their job," said player and coach Josh Concanen. "They are probably one of the fittest teams in the Priaulx League, if not the fittest.

"Plus, there's the togetherness that we have over here. We're best of friends, we've grown up together. We work for one another and we push each other to new levels. If you can play at the top level you learn small details from the better players. They work hard to improve."

The Ridunians haven't won a Muratti match for 99 years and Alderney residents have been wishing the team well with silver and blue ribbons covering shop fronts and windows.

Mr Concanen is hoping they will not be disappointed: "We get stopped in the street and you don't mind having a little conversation because they are just as passionate about football right now as we are. It's good for the island.

"If we won we would be leaving a bit of a legacy behind. It would mean a lot for the island to leave everyone with a memory. Loads of people want to see it and we'll do our very best to make sure we can."

Kick off is at 12:30 at the Arsenal football ground.
