More flights for the 'Bailiwick bubble'

Tuesday 23 June 2020

Aurigny is putting on more flights between Guernsey and Alderney so people in the islands can take advantage of the 'Bailiwick bubble' this summer.

With travel options off island still severely limited with only critical key workers exempt from having to isolate on their return to the Bailiwick, many people will be looking at island hopping this year.

Hotels, guest houses, campsites and other places to stay are all advertising for 'staycations', with some people visiting their neighbouring islands for the first time.

However, until this week, Aurigny is only flying a very limited service between Guernsey and Alderney as passenger numbers have been much lower than usual since travel restrictions were brought in during March.

Now free movement is allowed between the islands, and is being encouraged, as part of Phase 5 of the lockdown exit strategy, the States-owned airline has announced more flights starting from this Friday.

A spokesperson for Aurigny said they've seen more people wanting to fly between the two islands so they want to offer seats where available to those who want to travel.

"Due to extra demand as we enter Phase 5 and in conjunction with the Bailiwick ‘Staycation’ promotion, Aurigny have put on extra flights to Alderney.

"It is hoped by putting on extra flights, especially those on Friday and Sunday, that people may take advantage of a long weekend in Alderney."

The additional Friday and Sunday services will start this week with the new Alderney schedule then following from Monday next week.

There will still be fewer flights operating than during a usual summer, but it will offer the chance to fly between each island twice daily between Monday and Thursdays and on Sundays, and there'll be three flights in each direction on Fridays. There are still currently no flights between Guernsey and Alderney on Saturdays.
