Airport security changes enter final phase

Thursday 14 February 2019

Work to 'enhance' the security area at Guernsey Airport is into its final stages, with everything due to be finished before the end of next month.

From today, and for the next few weeks, passengers will be once again queuing within the landside concourse area.

The Airport's managers have said this may mean it looks like there are longer queues than normal, as was soon earlier in the renovation work, but the queuing system has been designed to make things as smooth as possible for everyone. They said the appearance of longer queues before the security podium is not because the process is taking longer, but is simply due to the fact the security combs have moved to just inside the newly refurbished area so the queues will be starting at a different place to normal.

While this final phase of work takes place, there will be two security lanes available for peak time departures and additional space has been made so passengers can have their outer clothing, cabin baggage, and electronic devices ready in trays to be screened.

Work to 'enhance' the security area at Guernsey Airport, which includes work to incorporate the duty free area into the security zone, started last year. Initially it caused big queues but that has eased off.

Since the start of this year, the contractors have been working on refurbishing the old security entrance area and integrating that space into the current facility now used by passengers, staff and business partners.

This final phase of the overall project is what will see passengers queuing in the main landside concourse area.

Head of Aviation Services for Guernsey Airport, Ash Nicholas said the work is progressing well.

“This has been a complex project, but it’s pleasing we are now entering the final phases of work. Passengers will shortly be benefiting from more space, and a calming environment for security screening. What we are now doing is reconfiguring the landside departures concourse area where passengers will queue. Passengers can help ease the process by getting ready for security before they start queuing, such as taking off coats, getting electronic devices out of bags, and ensuring they stick to airline cabin baggage limits. The last phase of works will be airside as work starts to expand the duty free shopping area. Once finished, duty free customers will notice an expanded range of products and ranges that will be on sale for the first time at Guernsey Airport.

Passengers flying out of Guernsey are advised to continue to allow plenty of time to check-in and security screening in order to meet their flight.

If applicable, they should pre-book any special assistance with their airline at least 48 hours before departure. A sunflower lanyard is available from the Airport Information desk for those passengers with a hidden disability.
