Adopt a Perry's square and join in the Big Beach Clean

Saturday 15 September 2018

Two initiatives this weekend could ensure Guernsey is looking spick and span as we head into the Autumn.

The annual Great British Beach Clean is taking place nationally, with efforts locally concentrated on two public group cleans, with like minded people encouraged to have a go at clearing any litter from other beaches too.

Nationally, more than 7,000 volunteers are expected to take part, helping to clean beaches all around the coastline of the UK and the Channel Islands.

The organisers said, "data collected from these annual beach cleans over the past 25 years have helped to bring about a change in how we view and use plastic. Information has helped to support changes such as the plastic bag charge and the reduction in plastic straws."

The environmental efforts will continue in Guernsey today and tomorrow with La Societe Guernesiaise Marine Biology section hosting two beach cleans. The first at Grandes Rocques today from 15:00 and the second tomorrow, from 15:00 at L’Eree.

Laura Bampton, Section Secretary of La Societe Guernesiaise’s Marine Biology Section, said there has been a growing awareness of the dangers of litter on our beaches, so they are expecting a good turn out.

"Since last year's Great British Beach Clean, Guernsey's public are so much more aware of the damage that beach litter can cause to marine life, so I'm hoping for a good turn out this year. Last year, 96% of the items collected on Guernsey's beaches were plastic, and I would be surprised if the figure isn't similar this year. Data like this is so important for supporting lifestyle changes such as the plastic bag charge, and I'm glad that here in Guernsey we can make a difference."

Anyone taking part is asked to wear good footwear and weather appropriate clothing. You will need a bag for the litter and the organisers also recommend wearing a pair of gardening gloves.

A spokesperson from Agriculture Countryside and Land management Services, States of Guernsey, said the overall group effort will benefit the island.

“Keeping our island beaches clean of rubbish, especially plastic, is crucial for the protection of our wildlife. Each and every single piece of litter removed makes our marine environment a safer place. Everyone can play their part and make a difference for the good.”

As well as the Great British Beach Clean, this weekend also sees World Cleanup Day 2, which is another international event which will see millions of volunteers trying to "rid the planet of litter and mismanaged waste."

Pick it Up Guernsey is hoping to encourage people to "adopt a Perry's grid square" which they will then clean of any litter this weekend.

Andy from Pick it Up Guernsey said they're hoping lots of wombles will take part.

“15th sept is World Cleanup Day. Pick it Up Guernsey have teamed up with Digimap who own Perry’s. We would like to invite the public to adopt a Perry’s grid square. On Saturday you can then ‘womble’ your square and post a photo of your wombling efforts on the Pick it Up Guernsey Facebook page.”

To adopt a square click on the link here and register your name against your chosen part of the Perry's Guide.
