Acting Head of Amherst Primary appointed to role permanently

Claire Hammond - who was formerly Deputy Headteacher and then Acting Headteacher - has been appointed as the permanent Headteacher at Amherst Primary School.

Miss Hammond was Deputy to her predecessor as Headteacher, Tracey Moore, who recently left her post after 18 years leading the school. Miss Hammond then became Acting Headteacher and has now been confirmed in the role on a permanent basis following a competitive recruitment process.

The appointment of headteachers is the responsibility of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture. The President of the Committee, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, welcomed Miss Hammond to her new permanent role.

"Claire has been a key figure at Amherst for several years now and I am sure her appointment – after a successful spell as Acting Headteacher - will be welcomed by students, staff, parents and carers," said Deputy Dudley-Owen.

"Claire has a huge amount of teaching experience not only in the Channel Islands but further afield in Singapore, too, where she helped lead a large eight-form entry British International School with a multicultural community consisting of over 50 nationalities.

"I’m excited to see her influence at Amherst develop even further in the years ahead."

The Committee said that Miss Hammond "is a firm advocate for providing a broad and balanced curriculum and strives to ensure all children have the opportunity to enjoy and develop their passions and aspirations".

"As the new Headteacher of Amherst, I hope to build on the successes of the school and continue to lead the vision and values that Mrs Moore and the school community have worked so hard to establish, ensuring that every child gets every chance, every day."
