98.6% pass rate for the Grammar Sixth Form Centre

Wednesday 17 August 2022

Sixth formers received their A-level and IB results this morning, and The Guernsey Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre is celebrating a 98.6% overall pass rate.

Students arrived at the school at 08:00 today; more than a quarter of them – 27.49% - achieved A*/A grades, whilst 76.9% achieved A*-C grades.

This is the first time since 2019 that grades have been awarded based on examination performance rather than attainment assessments because of pandemic-related disruption.

In 2021, the school announced a 100% pass rate with 41.2% of the grades at A*/A, 69.4% at A*-B, and 90.6% at A*-C.

In 2019 – the last examination year before covid – there was a 99.1% pass rate. A quarter received A*/A grades, whilst over 80% received grades at A*-C.

Principal Kieran James said these are the “first examination results” for this cohort of students in several years of schooling, and after “a really challenging two years”.

Mr James added that only a “tiny handful” didn’t receive an award, whilst the “vast majority” received their first-choice university place.

Student Louis Thomas received three A’s in maths, chemistry, and physics, and will proceed into university studies.

He plans to rescind an offer for a university place to study Natural Sciences, and instead reapply for Medicine at Exeter in October because of his better-than-expected grades.

“I’m really happy with three A’s, and very happy with the A in maths,” he said.

Mr Thomas said he will celebrate his results at the West Show later today.

Another Student, Joss, received two A’s and two C’s in a range of humanities subjects, and plans to take a year out travelling and working in Australia before applying to university to study International Relations.

Amelie received two A*’s, an A, and a B and is heading to the University of Leeds in September to study Middle Eastern Studies and Politics.

Both of them will spend their afternoons at the West Show, before ending the day celebrating in town.
