£80,000 donation to help older people

A record amount of money is being given to the Guernsey Community Foundation by the Pargiter Trust to distribute to charities that support the elderly this year.

Since 2014, the UK-based trust has given the Foundation £50,000 a year to help people over 65 live independently, stay healthy, and be socially included.

But now that amount is going up £80,000.

Charities wishing to apply for funding have until the 4 February to do so.

Jim Roberts, Chief Executive of the GCF, said the partnership with Pargiter Trust allowed them to go from strength to strength, and in 2019 with the new grant, they expect to be able to give record levels of help to charities.

"Grants are awarded in support of work which improves the health and wellbeing of older people. That might involve increased access to facilities, advice and training, as well as help overcoming problems relating to old age," he said.

"Grants can be used to fund existing services or new initiatives, or to meet capital costs such as the purchase of new equipment. We also consider applications from organisations that support carers of older people, and from professionals working in this field.”

Newly appointed Guernsey-based Pargiter Trustee Mike Starkey added: "Pargiter is very much looking forward to working with the Guernsey Community Foundation in 2019. The increased level of support will, we believe, help older residents of Guernsey and Alderney."

Last year, the GCF gave Pargiter money to a whole range of different charities, with many of them getting thousands of pounds. The biggest award made was £18,432 to activity practitioners, for their development costs, lunch clubs and game sessions.

Application forms are available to download from the Foundation’s websiteand may be completed by hand or electronically.
